Most of our seed packets are packed with a lot of seeds – more than most folks need! We know that you might not want to plant all of your seeds at once but did you know that fresh seeds can be kept for years when stored in cool and dry conditions? If you don’t plant them all this year, our seeds can be planted next year if kept in these conditions!

Catnip – Nepeta cataria

About Catnip

Catnip leaf is well known for its gentle and calming properties as it has been employed in traditional western folk practices for centuries. Nepeta cataria is a member of the mint family and features a square stem, heart-shaped leaves, and small fragrant pink to white flowers on a terminal spike. The leaves can be tinctured, steeped into a delicious and relaxing catnip tea, and added to herbal tea blends. Start early indoors or outdoors after danger of frost. Hardy perennial, will self-sow once established. Likes rich or sandy soils. Tolerates poor soil and drought. Calms mild stomach disorders, produces restful sleep and relieves fever when added to teas. Tovah Martin writes that rats are reputed to despise it, so it is sometimes used as a companion plant for melons and squashes. Researchers at Iowa State University have claimed that catnip is a top-notch mosquito repellant – rubbing crushed leaves on the skin can be several times more effective than using other repellants! The flowers are especially attractive to pollinators.
